Kilburn literary task

The Kilburn literary festival was an event being held in Kilburn to encourage more people to read and write their own stories. This event was held for 5 days.

First we researched about the Kilburn festival and found out what aspect of the festival we wanted to talk about. as a group we decided to talk about the events happening like the competition and the festival itself.

This screenshot shows, how we edited the track and also set it like this so we can se what track goes next, first presenter then interviewer then interviewee. the bottom track is the background sound to make the audio seem like they were actually outside. That background track was got from freesfx.co.uk




This Screen shot shows how we ordered and positioned  the audio to make it easier to organise and find any mistakes in. The top track is the presenter give small information about the festival than transitioning it to interviewer who is acting as if they are actually their, this is also emphasised by the 4th track which is the background noise to make it seem more realistic, and the 3rd track is the interviewee answering the question.

Missing people

This item is about the amount of people who are reported missing in the west end. This news item has impact, timeliness, bad news for their values, it also provides information about how many people have gone missing.

The impact is that their is someone's child missing, which would manly effect parents since they would know how that family feels. Secondly the timeliness of it is pretty recent so it shows that she hasn't been gone for ages, she recently disappeared, and it concerns her family. Finally the fact that someone has gone missing is bad news, we also paired it with a statistic showing it to be worse, than one random disappearance.



This file was easier to edit since their was only one presenter talking and it wasn't suppose to sound like it was outside. The reason there are 2 tracks is because, The presenter made a mistake on the first run, so instead of deleting the whole track we decided to remove the part he made a mistake on and record the rest of it.

Affordable Housing

This article is about how the mayor of London has decided to deal with the housing crisis in London, by creating £225 million worth of housing. This articles values are impact, timeliness and good news.

Influence by these news values

1.The article has a value of impact because this new scheme is to help the people in London get affordable housing. this also affects the housing market cause they are gonna have to compete with other housing companies so they will lower the prices making it more affordable.
2.This article is timely because this crisis is happening right now and will be here until it has been sorted, cause of how it affects everyone.
3.lastly, this is good news because this means that there will be housing for the citizens of London.

2.this article is timely since it is happening right now and will continue until the find where their base of operations are.

Violent crimes in the capital goes up 22% i the past year

I have included this news item in my radio broadcast because it includes all of the local news values that have been listed below.

Bad News - this news isn't something that a majority of listeners would want to hear.

Proximity- this news item regards the local area; it includes most boroughs in London and therefore one that most listeners can relate to. Oxford street is the busiest area in London , one of which many listeners pass through  or work on.

Timeleness- this news item is new news and its based on statistics that haven't been heard before.

Human Interest - this news item would come of interest to many as it is new statistics regarding their local area. Also other areas and boroughs are involved in this broadcast and therefore affects more than just one group of people. The news item also has a speaker who is a ember of labour and therefore has authority so her opinion is counted and taken note of by listeners. 

Impact- this local news story has a large impact on the listeners as it talks about many different boroughs including the local area and therefore involves all of the listeners.  Crime is a taboo topic (murder, death etc) one in which not many people want to talk about , it therefore has an impact on the listener because of this. I have chosen to add this news item to my local radio broadcast because the statistics have increased and will have an impact on the listener because they listener wasn't expecting the increase.

 Prominence- this news item is newsworthy as it includes new statistics that haven't been released before therefore are newsworthy because they will have an impact on the listener.

Conflict- conflict draws in the listener more because not many news items include conflict  and are just based on facts and statistics.  I have included this news item in my radio broadcast because due to the facts and statistics there is a conflict between a met spokesmen who states that there is not really much of an increase and that the statistics have changed because now there is more of an accurate increase; however a member of labour (Joanne McCarthy) disagrees and says "If this had been a dramatic change in recording we would expect to see a one off spike. Instead what we are seeing is a worrying trend developing with overall violent crimes across most categories on the up".

Article 9

Kilburn resident Peter Williams has been told by Michael Fitzpatrick of coca cola London that the fungi floating in his apple juice are perfectly edible. Williams say he noticed multiple pieces of fungi floating at the top of his innocent drink. What he said was. Interviewee: I took it home and was about to open it when I saw some fungi at the top of the bottle. One small one and one big one. Luckily I hadn't open the bottle so it was still factory intact.

Fungi found in drink (Health) as you can see we have more than seven news items, this is because we had chosen some other articles and decided not to use them because we have to many of that genre for example when we made our first new items we realised that three of them were crime.

there are many places to find news articles to report on, but it is harder to find local news items meaning that we have to go a find these news items ourselves. the best places to look for this articles are:

• Local Community centre
• Local University

But i also have to be careful to avoid Churnalism, which is when you take a article and just read it as it is written. meaning we have to read and take only the parts that cannot be changed (Interview and Anecdote) and just retell the article. some of the News websites were:

Audacity Tools

Audacity Tool 1

the zoom tool was essential in the editing process of creating the radio news bulletin. it allowed us to get close and personal to cut out any unnecessary pauses as seen in the picture.

what this enables us to do is cut out any unnecessary noise or pauses that occur, allowing our news item to flow well.






Audacity Tool 2

The second tool we used was the envelope tool. This allowed us to fade down the volume of a existing audio track which then we were able to speak over it. We used this when we had to mellow out the intro music to introduce the radio station name. This allowed our voice to be clearly projected and heard over the jingle .

The third tool that we learnt during the process of creating our news bulletin was the use of multiple tracks. Using multiple tracks allows us to edit our audio easier and more efficiently during the post-production stage of our work. Having all the audio on one track is too complicated to work efficiently with, whereas having multiple tracks gives us as much freedom as possible to work with our audio.

The fourth tool used was the amplify tool. this proved vital when composing the vox pop. during the vox pop we noticed that the voices weren't all the same level some voices were too loud and some not as loud. Since some people were further away from the microphone, they were naturally less audible, so we amplified the audio they provided to ensure that the show was broadcast on an equal noise level. The beauty of the amplify tool was that we were able to roughly even them all out to make it sound as professional as possible

The tool highlighted is the time shift tool. What we have done with this tool is used it to shift our pieces of audio to where we wanted it to be. This enables our news item to flow smoothly, organically and be more organized. below shows an example of the time shift tool being used in the creation of our news bulletin. it shows each component being placed in its relevant place

The Sync-Lock tool was the 7th tool we learnt to use. This useful tool  is a feature that allowed us to force all highlighted tracks to be synchronised as one big group. the noise reduction tool is self explanatory. It simply removes any unwanted background noise. This showed it true potential when the presenters tracks were playing because you were able to hear background noise which made it sound unprofessional 

                                                                                  




creating the "sound stab"

We used the software GarageBand to cut this jingle that we choose from over 2000 jingles, by cutting the appropriate selected part of the beginning of the jingle to create a music stab. This music stab we used to add in the beginning of our 5 minute radio in-between each news stories item which was useful in creating an impact of the news stories that the presenter mentions.

CreaTitle music 

When creating our title music we used two loops. To find the right loops we clicked on a variety on tags which minimised the loops that we didn't need.

Below is a screenshot of our complete track title. The yellow line is the fading tool which was used to gradually fade out the loop. 

Below is the completed title music which will be used at the start of our news broadcast; this will be  used to identify are local news broadcast. it is catchy and upbeat which is important to have in our track title as it attracts and engages the target audience.

Introduction

To create my own local news radio station, and to do this i need to understand the genre of news.this means analysing the codes and conventions of two or three existing local radio stations. as well as finding out what makes the news. i will be using audacity to collect examples. it must include the codes and conventions of a local News Radio:

• Title music and jingle
• at least one presenter
• at least two specialist reporters
• at least two Outside Broadcasts
• at least one interview
• at least use one vox pop
• some sound effects
• an organised structure

1.Top story 22secs	Large scale prisoner exchange happened between Syria and turkey and they fear that 2 of the prisoners are part of the Islamic state fighters known as ISIS.	This is in the news because not only is it bad news, since one day this terrorist group will attack us. But it is also its national because this could cause issue for other countries.
2. 9secs	Trail has begun in south Africa of the British business man, Shrien Dewani who had allegedly hired a hit man to kill his wife on their honeymoon.	This is in the news because it is about a British couple who are on trial for something ludicrous especially because they just got married.
3. 11secs	Business secretary Vince cable has told the liberal democrats part that the business deficit cannot be eliminated unless they raise taxes, and accuses the conservative for trying to disguise them as Ukip.	This is in the news because it affects people in Britain, so it is both proximity and impact on people. Also because of the allegedly disguise of Ukip which causes controversy.
4. 11secs	Professor from university college London has won a Nobel prize along with two Norwegian partners for research into the brains navigation system.	This is in the news because it is really amazing since people are still learning about the brains capabilities.

audience research

My groups target audience is 'people living Maida Vale' who want to learn more about their area and whats going on, and to find out what is going on in the future, so to do this we researched information and plans made by Westminster for the people, when we searched this up on Google.com, about 624 thousand results were found in 0.42 seconds.

these sites help us find out more about what people like to listen to more, how many people actually tune into radio shows, where people listen to radio more and other questions. this is useful to us since we need to find out what news would be best to present to our audience. this way we can decide which news items we should use in our Local news broadcast.

Code and Convention

Codes and Conventions are very important to any form of media. in the News Radio genre there are different codes and convention to other types of items:

1. Title music and jingles are used to introduce the show and to inform the listeners that the show is starting. This is usually done with a catchy tune, so that their audience can tell what show is what just from the title music.
2. The reporter would introduce themselves at the beginning of the show. this is to create a connection with people. also if the news is incorrect then it gives the audience someone to blame, which is one con to being a presenter.
3. 2 specialist reports are required. one for the interview and another for the vox pop, they are required for a different point of view on the news item.
4. Outside broadcasters are to get the publics opinion on the news item.
5. Sound effects are useful to help people understand what exactly the next news item is about.

Planning

The first thing we did for the planning was make a schedule, that way we can keep track of. this makes it easier to tell how many news items we've done and how long they are.

the most vital program we plan on using is Blogger. Blogger allows us to make a blog which all our coursework would be shown. We would explain what we do each stage of the way as we progress through the creation of our own local radio bulletin. Blogger allows the examiner easy access to each and everyone of our blogs which allows him/her to mark it with ease. Since Blogger is owned by Google it is necessary that each member in our production group had a Gmail so we can associate our accounts to blogger and keep in contact 
Audacity is another essential program in the production of our news bulletin. Audacity is a free audio editor which we plan on using. despite the simplicity of it, it really packs a punch with effects tab that's gives you access to over 30+ effects

Sound cloud is a online audio distribution platform which will allow us to upload any of our audio tracks that need uploading. Once its uploaded to SoundCloud it will allow us to embed the audio directly into our blogs.

Garage band is an application that allows you to create music/jingles on macs. Garage band will allow us to create our own personalised jingle and intro for a radio broadcast. It has over 1000 different instruments at the disposal of a click.

This can also be used to create sound effects for the intro when we name the most important articles of the day. this is useful because everything in this program is copyright free and can also be modified to the creators choice.

Introduction	Presenter: This is Megan wood, with Kilburn news, it is now 8 am on march 27 and here are our headlines for this morning. Local figures buck national trends, Kilburn teenagers go missing and Kilburn has a housing boom.
Article 1	Presenter: While reported crime figures are going down nationally, here in west London the trend is up, crime in Camden has seen a 22% increase over the July to December period. Met Officer Andrew Barnes had this to say Met officer: I would just like to refute, these ideas that the police are not doing  their job based upon the recent statistics that crime has increased, well the reason why the crime has increased  is because we have more efficient police doing their job excellently and therefore capturing more criminals. We also have a more efficient  procedure of recording criminals therefore crime has increased is a positive thing and not a negative thing because we are now catching more criminals Presenter: But local councillor Joanne McCartney sees things differently. Joanne McCartney:  If this had been a dramatic change in recording then we would've seen a one off spike.
Article 2	Presenter: Missing person’s data is showing a particular rise in untraceable young people. 54 under 25 year olds have been registered as missing so far in this calendar year. The latest is 22 year old Tania Georgeat. Who was last seen 3 months ago in west Acton.
Article 3	Now our message boards have been trending on the topic of invasion of privacy through our own webcams. So we sent public spokesman, Jaden Rigby to ask the public their opinion on this topic. Public spokesman: Voxpop
Article 4	Presenter: Public Health England has started a hard-hitting campaign to point out the damages that cigarettes cause to the human body. This includes highlighting the multiple impacts that toxic ingredients in cigarettes can have on the body. Professor Kevin Fenton, National Director for Health and well-being says: Kevin Fenton: much of the harm caused by smoking is noticed right away, one of the effects is tar build up in the lungs, preventing the person from breathing, but this effect and many more can be prevented if the person stops smoking immediately. So stop smoking, stop the rot.

In addition all those who work in food outlets and have had direct contact with the public will have had to be trained in responding to customer queries.  Our health and safety correspondent Jason Mendonca has been visiting cafes on Elgin Avenue. H&S correspondent: Can you tell me how you have prepared for the new allergen regulation. Interviewee  responds H&S correspondent: why thank you so much for your time.
Article 8	Presenter: A major careers fair is being held at Willesden college campus tomorrow, march the 28 from 9 to 6. This event is open to the public and will feature professionals from various industries. It will be an opportunity to meet experts and learn new skills.
